Term 4- St Patrick's Day
Despite the mornings starting rather chilly this week, we were excited to be greeted by such beautiful sunshine! On Monday across the school we learnt all about St Patrick's Day and for some of our Robins they came already full of knowledge but for some they were learning all about it for the first time.
Robins loved hearing how St Patrick had actually been born in Wales and had returned to Ireland when he was older, being the first person to bring Christianity to Ireland! They loved learning all about how he used the shamrock to teach them about God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit and even made their very own shamrocks!
As the Irish Folk music played through the speakers Robins celebrated St Patrick's day together and ended with their very own Irish flag!
In Maths this week we continued to draw attention the purpose of counting, with Robins also being given the opportunity to count beyond 20. At the beginning of the week the children focused on the '1 more' staircase pattern where the towers appear in numerical order....
Robins were great at working out what the next number in the sequence would be!
We then sung one of our favourite songs....and used it to help us see the '5 and a bit structure'
1, 2, 3 ,4, 5 once I caught a fish alive
6 hmm lets look how we show it....
We can say 5 and 1 make 6 altogether
Let's keep going.....
6, 7 hmm lets look how we show it....
We can say 5 and 2 make 7 altogether
We then had a go at making our own staircases, this was a little bit tricky as we needed to remember what number came next using our 1 more than pattern...
In PE this week our dance was centered all around vehicles and we loved every minutes of it, Mrs Bell popped in to see us as we sounded like we were having too much fun!
We transformed into cars, trains and planes, zooming off onto the country roads, going over speed bumps and then chugging along the tracks before reversing into the sidings!
It was then time to take off, into the skies high above Great Shefford, the sky was clear and we were soon high above the school swooping high and low!
As we counted our 16 beats the children were fast becoming experts at listening to changes in the music and changing their actions to fit with the music, we just can't wait to see what next week brings!
Unfortunately, we cannot say too much about Wednesday.....what we can say is that you will have to wait until Sunday 30th....if you know what I mean?
Skipping straight onto Thursday then, and of course we were excited about Mystery Reader and Balance Bikes.
This week we took our balance bikes outside. Again, we went through the saftey talks about travelling at speed and the consequences of falling on the playground....i.e cut knees! I am not sure how much anyone listened - oh to be 4 and 5 when danger equals excitement and you think you rule the world....off they went at top speed....and not one single fall and not one single cut knee! They are far braver than we give them credit for. I tried to take a photo of everyone, apologies if you can't spot your child, its so hard to take photos when they are whizzing around!
After Balance Bikes it was time for Mystery Reader. Even before we had been out on the bikes, we could hear children discussing who they thought it could be, we even heard... "I am keeping my jumper on for PE so I can change back quickly so I am ready for the Mystery Reader" (a bit of forward thinking there!!!). Anyway the time came, Mrs Kimber sent us a message over the walkie talkie that the Mystery Reader had arrived and that it was somebody's Mum....ah ha.... we had been given a clue - it was a Mum.....Maddie could it be your Mum - "No"......Teddy could it be your Mum "No"....Stanley could it be your Mum "No" - well, the shocked look on Stanley's face when he turned round to see his Mum, that look soon turned to pride followed by a loving hug. Thank you to Stanley's Mum, and little brother for being our Mystery Reader this week.
Who will it be next week?
And finally we finished our week off with our welly walk. We met Harry and Dancer, we saw Eleanor's Dad and Nancy's Dad - all giving us a friendly wave and warm smile - such a lovely community to be part of. When we arrived back at school, everyone we passed in the corridor asked about our walk - it made us all feel very special and very important - thank you everyone.
And finally finally....in phonics we are working on sentence dictation - this week the sentence was 'Mark and Carl got wet in the rain' and just look at the results of our efforts - amazing independent writing.
Sssshhhhhh - heads up - next week's sentence is - " It has been hot this year"
