Term 5- Week 3

As the penultimate week began we were so excited to enter Forest school for the second time and we certainly didn't let the slightly damp conditions dampen our spirits, to be honest they worked even better for Robins as it meant that it was even muddier than the last time we had been in there!

After we had reminded ourselves about the safety rules and things that we might come across that we needed to ensure we didn't touch or ensureed we told an adult about, it was time to go on a scavenger hunt for woodland animals! We searched high and low, for some of us we searched even lower than others when we literally got stuck in the mud!

Off we went into the forest, how many animals would we find? It was particularly difficult as a lot of the animals were camouflaged by their surroundings! Just look at how many animals we found.....

It was then time to explore the rest of Forest School and this week Mhairi taught us to tie a piece of string onto the end of our sticks so that we could fish them out of the pond once we had thrown them in! Just look at how much fun we had throwing them in and fishing them back!

Needless to say we had some muddy Robins by the end of the Forest School sesson but they all had an amazing time! Please can we remind everyone to bring a thin rain coat and spare socks every week as we never know what the weather is going to be like and we definitely need spare socks due to the pond! Thank you.

This week in Maths we continued to develop our counting skills, with a particular focus on counting up to 20 and recognising what counting strategies are good to use and which aren't, for example recognising that subitising isn't a accurate counting method for larger numbers.

Robins were fantastic at recognising that if you move objects as you count them and put them in a straight line then this helps you to be accurate in your counting! Robins enjoyed practicing this method using different equipment!

On Tuesday we could hardly beelieve when we came in and we found lots of sleeping bees around the room, Mrs Brown told us to make sure didn't wake them so we carefully left them alone until it was time for us to go on a Bee Hunt, becoming official Bee Keepers of Robins! In our Maths lesson, there were 20 bees per child missing all around Robins, could you beelieve it! We had to find our 20 bees and fill up our very own bee hives!

With calls of....... 'This is so much fun!, I've got 3 bees'

                           'I've got 5 bees'

                           'I've got 6 bees'

Who would find all their bees first? It was lovely to hear so much language happening and so many smiles on Robins faces!

'I've got 12 more to find'

On Wednesday and Thursday we continued our counting to 20 and this time we were counting on from a number. We rolled the dice.....it landed on 6 so we had to count on from 6 up to 20....next it landed on 4.....so we counted on from 4.

We were very lucky as we did have lots of help. Some of the Red Kites joined us to help with our Maths and with our reading.

As the sun reappeared on Tuesday we took full advantage and enjoyed our lovely outside area, creating magical potions, witches tea to regular cups of tea which were kindly offered to Mrs Brown!

Another favourite area at the moment is our sandpit, from building castles to building roads, our imagination runs wild from the moment that the lid opens!

I completely forgot to put this on the page last week so this week you will get a 'double treat'.

Last Friday we started our sentence dictation for the story of The Gingerbread Man - we got off to an amazing start, the children were enthusiastic, we discussed the spelling of some very challenging words such as 'unfortunately' and we used the word mat to support us. We modellled the process once twice and then off they went!

Just look how they got on!

And finally.....and this is scary!!!!! After half term, we will be thinking ahead to the EYFS children becoming Year 1s....I did say it was scary - scary in the fact that the time has flown, we are already talking about the last term. To make the whole idea a little less daunting, we will ease the children through the next steps (even though they will find it a breeze, it is us adults who feel all the big emotions). So.....next term, we will start the Robins children lining up in the mornings with the rest of the school on the main playground and coming in through the main gate. Drop off happens between 8.30 and 8.45 - a kiss and hug at the gate, they run in happily and play whilst you walk away (some of you smiling and some of you sobbing!!!!).

Have a great weekend and see you all on Monday - next week we have science week and movie night!
