Owls Step Back into the Stone Age!
Owls have had a wonderful first full week back at school! The children have settled quickly into their new routines and have approached their learning with great enthusiasm.
This term, our History topic is From the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We have explored the different periods of prehistory and have been thinking about how life in Britain changed over time. Our new History display will help us learn important vocabulary, examine prehistoric tools and discover fascinating prehistoric sites, including some that are right on our doorstep!
This week, Owls Class also created timelines showing the journey from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. The children carefully placed the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age in chronological order. They were amazed to discover how much longer the Palaeolithic period lasted compared with the later periods. Creating and presenting the timelines neatly required lots of concentration and perseverance. I am very proud of their finished work!
Our English learning links closely with our History topic through our new text, Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura. The children have enjoyed examining the illustrations, making predictions, sequencing events and exploring new vocabulary. They worked with their partners to discuss the meanings and word classes of new words before orally rehearsing interesting sentences.
Here are just a few examples of the incredible work the children have produced during their first full week back.
In Maths this week, Owls have been exploring place value. The children used practical counters to represent and partition numbers up to 1,000 into hundreds, tens and ones. Working practically helped them understand the value of each digit and explain their mathematical thinking to a partner.
In our first RE lesson, Owls Class began exploring the key question, “Who do Christians believe Jesus is?” The children examined different artistic representations of Jesus from around the world and discussed why he may be shown in different ways. They then shared and recorded their existing knowledge, recalling Christian beliefs and stories about Jesus, including his miracles and why Christians call him the Son of God.
Important Reminders
Reading: Reading records and levelled reading books have now been sent home. Please listen to your child read at least four times each week and sign their reading record. We review the records regularly so that we can celebrate and support the children’s reading at home. Children are also very welcome to read books of their own choice alongside their school reading book. We would love to hear about what they are enjoying, so these books can also be recorded in their reading record.
Homework: Times tables and spelling homework will be sent home every Friday and should be returned by the following Thursday.
Times Tables Rock Stars: Please encourage your child to practise regularly at home using Times Tables Rock Stars.
PE days: Tuesday – Gymnastics; Thursday – MNR. Please ensure that children come to school wearing the correct PE kit.
