Term 1 Week 4
There has been plenty of thoughtful work in Owls, and it has been lovely to see the children’s confidence as they share their ideas.
Maths
We used Base 10 to partition numbers in different ways and explored finding 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 more or less. We also worked on number lines that did not start at zero. The children found the difference between the start and end numbers, then divided it by the number of intervals to work out what each step was worth. This was challenging, and it was good to hear them explain how they reached their answer
History
We explored how archaeologists know that early humans lived in Britain. The children looked at the ancient footprints discovered at Happisburgh in Norfolk and finds from Star Carr in Yorkshire, including flint tools and objects made from animal bones and antlers. They used this evidence to compare life in Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Britain and thought about why the smaller Mesolithic tools might have been useful.
English
nspired by Stone Age Boy, the children planned diary entries from the boy’s point of view. They mapped out his meeting with Om, the hunt and his return home, thinking carefully about what he might have seen and how he felt. This week, they began turning those plans into diary entries. I’m looking forward to sharing their finished writing with you next week.
Free Write Friday
Over the past few weeks, the children have used picture prompts as the starting point for stories they have written independently. We’ve had birthday surprises, mysterious gardens and encounters with giants! It has been lovely to see the different directions their imaginations take them and the confidence with which they share their own ideas.
A special story from William
William had been telling me about a story he was planning and writing at home, so it was a lovely moment when he brought it in for me to read. He was so excited to share it, and I could see just how much thought he had put into it. Written completely independently, his story follows Bob and Harold on an adventure through China, America, Japan and France, with a dinosaur museum and LEGOLAND along the way!
