Term 1 Week 5

2 Oct 26
We’re starting this week’s blog with something that wowed all the Owls.
Stig’s wonderful adventures at Spencer’s home!

What a wonderful adventure Stig had at Spencer’s home! He went roller skating, watched Spencer’s football match and joined a walk to collect conkers. He also came back with some lovely additions to his suitcase: a little pillow, a cosy blanket and the conkers they had found.

The Owls were WOWED when we shared his adventures with the class. The blanket and pillow were so soft! Stig has certainly had quite an upgrade from sleeping on a stack of newspapers in his cave! I was particularly impressed that Spencer had made the pillow using old clothes and it had prompted him to find out how Stone Age people made their clothes. It was lovely to see him taking his learning further at home.

Spencer wrote about their adventures in Stig’s book using beautifully neat handwriting and included some lovely photographs. We’re unable to share these photographs on the school blog, so we’ve included snippets of his writing for you to enjoy instead.

Thank you, Spencer, for looking after Stig so thoughtfully!

English

This week, the Owls wrote diary entries inspired by Stone Age Boy. It was lovely to see them organise events in chronological order and include the character’s thoughts and feelings. They used time adverbials with commas, expanded noun phrases and new vocabulary to describe what they saw, heard and felt. They have done a remarkable job!

Science

The Owls enjoyed making model arms to explore how muscles work in pairs. By pulling the pipe cleaners, they showed how the biceps contracts and the triceps relaxes to bend the arm, with the opposite happening to straighten it. It was lovely to see them using their models to explain their learning!

Our Art Learning Journey

The Owls have been exploring prehistoric artists’ work and experimenting with charcoal, including thick and thin lines, smudging, blending and texture. We tried drawing a woolly mammoth in pencil before using charcoal to recreate animal outlines inspired by Chauvet Cave, focusing on line, shape and proportion. These are the first steps towards our final piece, which we look forward to sharing over the coming weeks!

PSHE

This week, we focused on our school’s Behaviour for Learning choices. The Owls discussed different scenarios, thinking about how their actions affect themselves and others. It was lovely to hear their thoughtful ideas about being respectful, kind and responsible, working as a team and trying their best. These are the positive habits we continue to encourage every day.

RE

This week, the Owls explored names and titles given to Jesus, including Good Shepherd, Light of the World and Prince of Peace. We discussed what these tell Christians about Jesus, and the children used drawings and short explanations to show their understanding. It was lovely to see their thoughtful interpretations!

History

This week, the Owls learned why the move to farming is known as the Neolithic Revolution. We explored how people began settling in one place, growing crops and keeping animals, rather than relying only on hunting and gathering. This marked the beginning of farming in Britain and brought big changes to everyday life!

Have a lovely weekend!
