Term 5 Week 4
Hello everyone!
Even though it was a short week because of the Bank Holiday on Monday, Owls Class have still been incredibly busy and packed lots of exciting learning into just a few days
In Reading this week, our learning was linked to animals and wildlife to celebrate the birthday of David Attenborough. The children explored a range of engaging texts through our whole-class reading sessions and had some brilliant discussions along the way.
We looked at 'How to Help a Hedgehog and Protect a Polar Bear' as well as 'The Animals of Farthing Wood'.
These texts encouraged the children to think carefully about conservation, habitats and the importance of protecting wildlife around the world.
We also took part in a virtual author event organised by BookTrust, which was a lovely opportunity for the children to hear from a diverse author and experience a different style of storytelling.
The children watched with great interest throughout the session and really enjoyed listening to the author speak about his life and his book. They were especially amused by some of the character names because many of them had never heard names like that before! This led to some lovely discussions in class about different cultures and backgrounds.
It was wonderful to see the children so engaged and excited about reading.
Our Reading Leaders have also been doing a fantastic job promoting reading for pleasure across the school. It has been lovely to see Key Stage 2 children completely immersed in books outside the Owls classroom during their free time.
I also loved seeing so many Owls children actively choosing to read for pleasure this week. Graphic novels were definitely a huge hit and it was wonderful to see the excitement and enthusiasm the children showed while reading and sharing their books with others!
Our newly developed reading nook is also being fully utilised by the Reading Leaders, who have been encouraging and supporting Key Stage 1 children to develop a love for reading. The space has created a calm and inviting area for children to share stories, recommend books and enjoy reading together.
In Maths this week, we have continued our learning on fractions. The children have been working on mixed numbers, fractions on number lines and equivalent fractions.
I was really impressed with the children’s confidence when explaining their thinking and sharing their answers with the class. We also had lots of great mathematical discussions and partner talk throughout the lessons.
In Art this week, the children have been developing their painting skills using watercolours. They explored different techniques and carefully practised using brushes to create detail, texture and different shades of colour.
It has been lovely to see the children becoming more confident and creative while experimenting with watercolour paints. Photos to follow!
We ended the week with a special assembly led by Ms Munday to celebrate the 100th birthday of David Attenborough. The children really enjoyed learning more about his life, his work and the importance of protecting our planet and wildlife.
On Friday afternoon, the children worked in their house teams to create a whole-school collaborative piece of artwork inspired by animals from around the world. It was lovely to see the children working together so creatively and supporting one another to produce such a beautiful display for our school.
What a lovely way to end another busy week in Owls Class.
