This week has seen the return of the daily mile. Each day your child will be running two laps of the school field. If they don't want to run, they can jog or walk. They can do this on their own or with a friend. The aim is to build up general fitness and stamina in the children. So far, they have been really enjoying it. It has been lovely to see them supporting each other!
The children have also continued to enjoy their country dancing. We are currently doing this in our P.E. lesson at the beginning of the week. The children have been dancing with a partner and in a group. They are trying very hard!
For our maths this week, the children have been going over lots of things. We have been counting in 1s, 2s 5s and 10s. We have been writing our numbers and thinking about more and less. We have also been going over our different addition and subtraction strategies, remembering that our number bond facts can really help us. Please continue developing this skill with your child. It is really important that they know all their addition pairs to ten, e.g. 0 + 10 = 10, 1+ 9 = 10, 2 + 8 = 10 etc. They can then use these to help with their subtraction pairs, e.g. 10 - 0 = 10, 10 - 1 = 9 etc. The children can then apply all these facts with pairs to twenty and beyond.
In grammar this week Year 1 have been going over how to form plurals by adding "s" or "es". Year 2 have been learning how to use commas in a list. In the photo below, Year 1 are playing a game. They had to listen to the singular noun, e.g. chair and then stand by the correct plural ending "s" or "es" for if we had two chairs. We had to remember that it wasn't the sound at the beginning of the single noun that was important, but the sound that was at the end.
In science, we have started our new topic "Living things and their habitats." Today we learnt about the difference between living things and non-living things. Living things breathe, grow, move and need food. They also need air and water. We then thought about things around us that are living, not living and used to be alive. We had a look outside to see what we could find. A tree or a bush that is growing is alive. A ball has never been alive. A twig used to be alive because it comes from a tree that was or is alive. Have a think of some different objects with your children. Is it living? Is it not living? Has it ever been alive?
Our second week of the last term had come to an end but we were still full of energy and ready to take on our final Daily Mile of the week! Kingfishers have taken to The Daily Mile like ducks to water, or should we say runners to the track!
Despite the temperature our Kingfishers were eager to set off around the track, some running from the get go, some starting out as a job and then running, whilst for others they needed to take little break and walk for some of the mile but what was demonstrated throughout was the perseverance........
and sense of community throughout!
Our brand new library is open!
This week we also began exploring our new library book collection, below are just a few!
For those of us who had brought back our older library books we changed these for a brand new library book...how exciting! We were reminded however that we need to take special care of books, ensuring that we look after them and return them in the same condition we found them so that others can enjoy it!
Don't forget to return your library books every Friday so that you can swap your book for a new one.
It was soon time for PE and this week we continued to develop our throwing skills, so working in pairs we practised throwing a bean bag underarm to each other!
We had to think about where our hands needed to be to be ready to catch the beanbag!
Once we had practised we then challenged ourselves by taking a step back every time we caught the beanbag....
How far apart would be get before we dropped the beanbag?
Whilst the weathers shining it's such a great opportunity to practice throwing and catching skills so why not get outside this weekend and how a go together?
In our Friday morning activities once we have finished our handwriting Mrs Brown puts a thought provoking picture on the board for us to write sentences for, this not only develops our handwriting but also encourages us to thinking about our sentence structure and use our phonics. Why not have a go at doing some writing for this picture?
Have a wonderful weekend!
