We can't believe another week has gone by! The children have worked very hard. In Literacy, we wrote our recounts about our trip to the West Berkshire Museum last week. The children did some lovely writing and we were very impressed with some of the adjectives used to describe the things we did!
In maths, we have continued our focus on multiplication. We have continued thinking about making groups of equal amounts, we then moved on to repeated addition where we added groups that had the same amount of items in each group.
In the pictures above, the children were making groups of cubes. Each group had to have the same amount of cubes in it. The children then had to write a repeating addition and count how many cubes there were altogether. It helped us if we made groups of 2s, 3s, 5s or 10s as we can count in these steps. For example, 2 + 2 + 2 = 6. We then counted the cubes in 2s - 2, 4, 6.
From this we moved to arrays. An array has columns and rows. For example, the array below has 2 columns with 3 counters in each column or we could say that there are 3 rows with 2 counters in each row.
The children then followed instructions to make their own arrays. The first picture shows 1 column with 12 counters in it.
The next picture shows an array with 2 rows. Each row has 6 counters in it.
In R.E. we have been thinking about leaders. This week we listened to the story of "Jesus Feeding The 5000". The children found out that Jesus performed miracles. Once the children had listened to the story, they created their own fishes and loaves of bread to put in a basket. This was to help them remember the story from the Bible.
This term on a Wednesday after assembly, Reverend Mike is doing some drumming with Kingfishers. The children are absolutely loving it! There are two groups, each group having a go every other week. Have a look at the photos of the fun the children are having!
That cool Friday feeling!
We had reached Friday and it was of course non-uniform day!!! From cool looking tracksuits to fast car hoodies, in-style denim to those who looked ready for a party, it is always lovely to see children's personalities come to life!
Maths time!
As we started our maths this week Mrs Brown explained how we had left measure behind and today we were moving onto something that we would most definitely need as we got older....what could it be? As Mrs Brown began placing magnetic coins on the board, we knew we were learning about money!
Kingfishers firstly sorted coins under their correct label from 1p all the way up to £2, with some of us finding this a bit tricky as they either hadn't seen or hadn't ever had to use real money before. However with a little help we were soon sensationally sorting, discussing how we know which coin is which!
It would be great if Kingfishers could practice recognising coins and notes over the next week at home and even have a go at counting some simple sets of coins for you!
It was soon time for phonics and after we had practised our diagraphs for the week, we then had a go at reading both pseudo (alien) and real words...we are amazing at ensure that we segment and blend the words to check that we have sounded it out correctly!
Why not have a go at these?
We then had a go at writing some of our tricky words and they were indeed tricky! However this week we learnt a rhyme to help us remember how to spell 'because'!
Why not have a go at writing 'because' over the weekend using our rhyme!
Toy Museum- OPEN
It was soon time for History and as we stepped back in time today we were eager to see what had been hiding in Mrs Browns bag all day and today Kingfishers were going to create their own timeline from the 1960s all the way to the 2000s!
From metal cars made in the 1960s to a 1970s Fisher Price Airport "It's a bit dusty!", we then moved onto Mrs Browns favourite toy from when she was little girl and we could hardly believe our ears when she told us that she had actually brought in the first one she had ever had! What could it be?.........
It was of course an original 1980s Polly Pocket, with this particular Polly Pocket being the 'Preschool' that Mrs Brown had been bought when she was little girl, "That's a long time ago!" and they weren't wrong!
We continued moving through the decades we had now reached the 1990s and were surprised to learn due to calls of.... "I've got that!", that Tamagotchi's were first brought out in the 1990's! Unfortunately Mrs Brown couldn't find her original one, which she told us was yellow but the hunt goes on for it!
We were now firmly into the 2000s and as our toy got passed around we noticed how the material has changed from metal to mainly plastic but also the colours were a lot brighter and the toy could do more, it could move, we could brush its hair and it even came with accessories!
Just look at our timeline of toys, we can hardly believe we actually got to see toys all the way from the 1960s!
You will also notice some ladybird books, which only cost 40p each from the 1960s and a beautiful doll, which we placed in the 1980s but if the owner doesn't think this is correct please let us know!
We then took what we had learnt from our group session and recreated the timeline in our books, could we remember the correct order for the toys? If not we didn't need to worry because we had our timeline set out on the carpet to help us!
We could hardly believe the day was going so fast and as Mr Richardson appeared at our door, we knew it was time for Cricket! This week we started off by practising our bowling skills, trying really hard to hit the other teams wickets....if we did we got to take the wicket over to our side!
Once we had practised our throwing, it was time to bring in the wicket keeper! This was the person who stood behind the cricket wickets and needed to catch the ball, we were soon showing really great accuracy when throwing the ball!
Despite the chilly temperatures Kingfishers kept going and we were soon introducing the batsman, whose job was surprisingly on this occasion not to hit the ball but for our bowlers to practice throwing the ball to the wicket keeper over the batsman!
Here are a few more pictures from our cricket adventures................
There is simply no better way to end our Friday but with show and tell and this week we had two real treats to enjoy! First up was a special item that had been won on an arcade machine that involved throwing balls, which sounded very tricky to Mrs Brown! This had all taken place on what sounded like a wonderful holiday!
"It's my space fidget toy and it can do this!"
(pops out the circles)
For our final show and tell and to end the week we were treated to a blast from the past when all of a sudden not just 1 but 10 Andrex puppies were brought into Kingfishers! As our Kingfishers showed us his two favourite ones, one which was like a bag and the second dressed ready for cold weather, we were delighted to learn that these had been bought for him and some even came with their own certificates!
Miss Carter even remembers having the handbag Andrex puppy "Does it have a stamp inside it?", as our Kingfisher slowing opened the zip we were all delighted to see that Miss Carter was right, the puppy did indeed have a stamp inside it and this stamp had never been used!
What a way to end the week! Kingfishers have had such a wonderful time in school this week and we can't wait to see them again next week ready for more learning adventures. Please don't forget that on a Friday we change our library books, slips will be sent home on Monday to those whose library books to remind our Kingfishers what book they have, thank you for your support with this.
To finish this week we just have a little photo from Lego club to show what one of our Kingfishers made all by herself!
Have a great weekend!
