20th June '25
Another week has flown by. Despite the extremely hot weather, the children have coped very well. If the hot weather continues next week, please ensure that your child has a hat and water bottle in school every day.
This week the children have been working hard on telling the time in maths. There have been lots of games and practical activities to help consolidate their learning and understanding. Year 1 have had a real focus on o'clock and half past. Year 2 have looked at quarter to, quarter past and telling the time to 5 minutes, for example, "twenty to twelve". As with many mathematical concepts, the key to becoming confident at telling the time is to keep going over it. You could support your child at home by asking them the time throughout the day.
In Literacy the children have planned and written their own acrostic poems about "SUMMER". They have come up with lots of ideas for each of the different letters in the word "summer". We have had snakes slithering in the grass, mummy planting in the garden - there were so many super ideas! Can your child remember their poem?
In art, we have been colour mixing with paint. We mixed the primary colours red and yellow to make the secondary colour orange. The children then explored making different shades of orange by adding black paint. This investigation will help the children when the children paint their flames for their "Great Fire Of London" paintings. The children loved experimenting with the paints!
In R.E. the children have been thinking about special places. This week the children have been learning about how the synagogue is a special place for people of the Jewish faith. Once the children had found out about the things that you would find in a synagogue, they worked with a partner to see if they could remember the different items and label them.
In science, we have continued to think about habitats. We went on a walk around the school grounds to see what habitats we could find - trees, a pond, shaded areas, sunny areas, bushes, wooded areas. We also thought about why Great Shefford is a good habitat for ducks!
In true Kingfishers style......
Happy Friday!
As the sun continued to shine, we couldn't believe that we had already reached Friday! Now as much as Kingfishers love The Daily Mile, we are of course in the middle of a heatwave so for the safety of all we completed The Daily Mile earlier today to ensure that it wasn't as hot and were encouraged to take as many breaks as we needed, not that Kingfishers appeared to need many!
It was soon time for Maths and as continued our measuring lessons, this week we moved onto measuring in grams! Kingfishers explored using a balancing scales, looking at using cubes to balance the scales and recognising that this would tell them what the weight/mass of the object was.....we even predicted correctly that the putty's mass would be greater than the pens!
We then had a go at reading circular scales, sometimes the arrow was pointing to a measurement that was marked on the scale but other times the measurement wasn't marked and we had to work it out, we found this a bit tricky! Why not have a go at the one below to practice....
Our morning had whizzed by and it was time to dive back in time to 1666 again, back to The Great Fire of London! This week we watched a short video which explained how the fire started and why it spread so quickly. We went back to the Bakery on Pudding Lane, where the fire in the oven hadn't quite been put out.....
We learnt how the fire spread quickly between the houses due to the being made out of wood, with many having thatched cottages and people in London having limited fire fighting equipment. As the fire spread people urged the mayor to use fire hooks to tear down the houses but as Kingfishers found out, it was due to the delay in this decision and the strong wind that led to the fire spreading further and more buildings being lost to The Great Fire of London!
Kingfishers loved creating their own timeline, thinking carefully about the order of the days of the week!
Due to the heat today our PE lesson took a slightly more gentle and calm route, with us all engaging in Yoga! Whilst some struggled at first to truly get into the 'yoga spirit' of calm, we were soon bending and stretching and positioning ourselves into different Yoga moves!
Just look at our moves.......
On such a warm day there was only one way to end our week....
Show and tell time!
First up was a rather interesting one for us, our first show and tell had been found in America on the side of the road! His name was potato, why you might ask? Well this is simply because he loves to eat potatoes of course! What could it be I hear you ask!
Thank you for bringing in Potato the shark to meet us!
Next up was a set of photos and boy do we love photos in Kingfishers! Eager to have a look at them we got to pass these around once we'd been told a little bit about them and found out that in the photos was in fact a friend that our Kingfisher that had made when he was in France! However the 'telling' didn't stop there, our Kingfisher was also wearing a blue friendship bracelet and we were informed that his French friend has a pink friendship bracelet! How wonderful, forever connected by friendship!
You'll notice in this particular photo the friendship bracelet but this photo also features a photo of a starfish that was found...how fantastic!
Our final show and tell brought sounds of awww into the room when a Unicorn appeared! It turns out this was one rather generous birthday gift from another Kingfisher and is called 'Sparkletot'. Please keep your dried pasta in a sealed container though because it happens to be this particular unicorns favourite food!
