What a busy week we have had. In Literacy the children have started learning the story Handa's Surprise by Eileen Browne. We read the story as a class and created a story map. The children then worked in pairs telling the story to each other.
In maths we have been doing some consolidation on rows and columns when we are making arrays. Please continue helping your child / children with counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s and 10s. If they are confident with this, you can move on to counting in 3s as well.
P.E. had an animal focus this week as well. We were on safari with elephants, monkeys, snakes and lions. Which animals are the children in the photos pretending to be?
In Design and Technology we have continued working on making moving pictures. This week the children used a lever and a pivot to make their animals move. We had butterflies and bumble bees flying, rabbits jumping, there were lots of super ideas!
Thank you to the children who represented our class at the cricket on Wednesday afternoon. The children who stayed behind had a lovely music lesson so that they didn't miss out on all the fun. There was singing, dancing and playing instruments. The children even got to have a go on a guitar! Look at the fun they had dancing like insects and flowers!
Although our week didn't quite finish as sunny as we would have liked, our mood for Friday could certainly be summed up in one word 'happy'! As we answered 'happy Friday Mrs Brown' to the register were knew we were in for a positive day!
We continued to learn all about money within Maths, with our knowledge around coins certainly developing and this week we moved onto counting in 1ps, 2ps, 5ps, 10ps and 20ps. This was a little bit tricky but we soon got the hang of it! Sometimes the wording of questions can trick us a little bit......
Have a go at this question below- remember to look carefully at the key words
How many coins are there?
What is the value of each coin?
What is the total amount?
Why not have a go at counting a set of coins at home and answering the questions above!
As we arrived at phonics the excitement was building, it was time to see who had remembered our rhyme from last week to help us when spelling the tricky word 'because'!
Mrs Brown was delighted to hear that everyone could remember the rhyme and Kingfishers loved our 1 minute timer challenge when they challenged themselves to write because as many times as they could in 1 minute!
Our winning number for how many times we could write 'because' in 1 minutes was a super duper 10!
Why not have a go at home, how many can you do in a minute?
We were soon flying into the afternoon and it was time to literally go back in time and this week Mrs Brown had called in help from Mrs Oberzole, Mrs Harris and Mrs Brown's daughter who had kindly lent her their childhood teddies and dolls! Kingfishers became true historians and had to work out which ones were from the past and which ones were from the present without Mrs Brown telling them which ones belong to which person.....
Before we handed the teddies and dolls around, we talked about what we noticed about them and whether we thought they were from the past or present. Kingfishers were fantastic at recognising that these were from the past....
And these are from the present.....
Kingfishers really enjoyed a hands on history lesson, exploring the toys and talking about how the toys had changed over time. They recognised that although some features had stayed the same "Both of the dolls still have clothes on", some of the features had also changed "The body is now material not plastic".
They also recognised that the dolls now come with so many more accessories, the new one even had crocs! We did however find it pretty amazing that Mrs Oberzoles Grandmother made the clothes for her doll!
After a group of Kingfishers had blown our socks off this week at the KS1 Cricket Festival we continued to practice our skills with Mr Richardson and this week it was all about throwing over arm to bowl.
This action shot really does say a million words! As we warmed up we were ready to take on the lesson and there were soon balls flying everywhere but Mrs Brown is please to report that this didn't last long and Mr Richardson soon taught us that it was not about aiming for the sky but more about learning to make the ball bounce!
As we were paired up we began to learn that to be successful at bowling we needed to have our arm straight and low and as we brought our arm up we needed to get the ball to bounce on the floor aiming for it then to hit the stumps or in this case the cones! Once it had hit the cones we could take them......Kingfishers aim got better and better!
It was then time to bring on the stumps! As we were split into groups, we made sure that we put into practice all of the skills Mr Richardson had just taught us, we kept our arms low and straight, ensuring we were aiming for the stumps and not the sky!
If the ball hit the stumps, then we got to put a cone on it!
Our cricket skills are really coming on and we can't wait to see what Mr Richardson has planned for next week!
This week we were treated to another wonderful show and tell when we met a Bunnykins called 'Peach'!
She had recently been bought using a birthday voucher from The Entertainer and enjoys eating lettuce and carrots, well we certainly enjoyed meeting Peach!
Have a wonderful weekend Kingfishers and we shall see you all next week ready for more adventures together!
