Another busy week has flown by and we have been busy, busy, busy! We have had a particular focus on science this week as we have had a whole school science week.

We have continued with our maths as normal. We have carried on thinking about fractions. This week has seen us thinking about "the whole". If we know a part, what is the whole? The children have used this concept with shape and small amounts. When we were using small amounts, we split our whiteboards into the number of parts that we needed. We then drew the part that we had. We then had to draw in the other parts to find the whole. We have also been thinking about unit and non-unit fractions. Unit fractions we have looked at are 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4. Non unit fractions have been fractions such as 2/3 and 3/4.

As mentioned earlier in our blog, this week has been science week. The children have been doing lots of science - making predictions, finding things out, interpreting our results etc. On Monday the children found out about how different animals adapt to the environments that they live in. The children had to read the clues and match them to the correct animal. We found out some interesting facts! This was followed on Tuesday by the children finding out about the adaptations an elephant has. The children then learnt how to draw an elephant and label the adaptations on it. Can your child remember what special features an elephant has?

On Tuesday and Wednesday the children observed our cress that we had been growing. They had made predictions about what they thought would happen. We had six containers of cress. Two were grown in the light, one with water and one without. Two were grown in the dark, one with water and one without and two were grown in the fridge. One container in the fridge was watered and the other container wasn't. Last week some of the children had predicted that the containers of cress that were watered would grow as their sunflowers had needed watering each day.

Have a look at our results! With the cress grown in the light, only the cress that was watered grew.

For the cress seeds that were grown in the dark, only the ones that were watered grew. However, the cress was more of a yellow colour than the nice green colour of the cress that had been grown in the light.

Finally, for the cress that was grown in the fridge, only the seeds that were watered grew. However, they had really only started to germinate (started growing). The cress was not as tall as the cress that had been grown in the light or dark.

The children recorded their results from how the cress now looked. They used their skills of observation. The children then came to the conclusion that in order for seeds to grow into healthy plants they need sunlight, water and warmth. Both the cress seeds that grew healthily and their sunflowers have needed these things.

To link our science and technology, the children have been working on designing and making bridges that will support a toy car. The have learnt that a bridge is a structure. We first had a go at making bridges out of Lego and then we looked at a picture of London Bridge to give us some ideas. We haven't quite finished them or tested them with toy cars yet. We can look forward to doing this after half term! The photos of our bridges will be available in our next blog...

Thursday afternoon then saw us working together in our houses. Mrs Chapman had set each house an investigation about dunking different biscuits. First we met in the hall to find out what we were doing, we then carried out the investigations in our houses and then we all met back up in the hall at the end of the day to explain our results and what we had found out.

Finally, this week for PSHE, the children had a lesson linked with the NSPCC. They learnt about the PANTS rule.

 Privates are private.

A   Always remember your body belongs to you.

N  No means no.

Talk about secrets that upset you.

S  Speak up, someone can help

If you would like more information about this and what the children learnt, feel free to speak to Mrs Harris.

What a busy term we have had! We hope you all have a lovely half term holiday.
