Welcome back to the final term of the year. We hope that you all had a lovely holiday. Despite only being back for a few days, the children have been "living life in all its fullness".

In Literacy the children have started to learn an acrostic poem about summer. They practised it as a class and then they practised it with a partner. Some children even wanted to perform it to the rest of the class. We also thought about words that we could change so that we can make up our own acrostic poems about summer.

In P.E. the children have been having great fun trying out country dancing. They have learnt how important it is keep in time with the music and with their partner. They have also had to think carefully about their left hands and feet and their right hands and feet.

In maths, we have moved on to time. We have been singing the months of the year and we have been learning how to read and make o'clock and half past times. Have a go at telling the time over the weekend. We also talked about different parts of the day - morning, afternoon, evening and night time and what we do during these parts of the day.

In design and technology the children finished making their bridges that they started in science week. They children worked sensibly with their partner designing and making their bridges. Their was lots of discussion about which materials to use. Cardboard is stronger than paper and adding plastic straws or wooden lollipop sticks might make the bridges stronger.

Once the bridges were made the children were able to test them to see if they would hold a toy car. Some did and some didn't. The children learnt that it was ok if their bridge didn't hold a car as they talked about what they would do next time to improve their bridge. Some of the most important changes were ensuring that the pillars holding the bridge up were all the same height and possibly having a support in the middle of the bridge as well. Have a look at the children's bridges. Which one did your child make?

Not only was it the first Friday of Summer Term 2, it was also Non-Uniform day and we had a completely different morning than we would normally have! Yet despite all of this Kingfishers coped amazingly well and Mrs Brown was blown away by their listening skills and how much positivity they brought to the day.

As we entered the hall we were all excited to find out who our visitor was, learning very quickly that he was called Greg from.....

We learnt all about how '52 lives' started form just 1 small act of kindness and then a whole charity was born, changing the lives to millions of people through kindness! It's also called '52 lives' because there are 52 weeks in the year! Greg told us that the charity works by....

After listening to Greg it soon became clear that spreading kindness not only helped those who receive the kindness but it also helps those who spread the kindess!

So that's exactly what we did! We spend the morning in our House groups creating something for someone who is special to us and really did spread kindness! From pictures to cards, crafts to friendship bracelets, it was lovely to see the children getting so creative and thinking carefully about what they wanted to give to others.

“Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.”
Bob Kerrey

After such a wonderful morning we settled quickly into the afternoon and were soon excited to hear that we were going to be transported back in time as this term our focus is on History. To warm up Kingfishers had a variety of dates from History on the board ranging from the 1600 to 2021 and after discussing each of the dates, which all had a corresponding picture on them, they were asked to put these dates in order, which they did amazingly!

Once all dates were in order we then discussed where they would fit into this timeline, discussing how they were born before 2021 but after 2000, whereas Mrs Brown was born before 2000, sadly Kingfishers weren't surprised!

Kingfishers were then taken back in time to London 1666, during the time of The Great Fire of London! Today they explored pictures of what life in London was like in 1666 compared to what life in London is like now and then worked hard to sort pictures into the present and those from 1666!

Next week we will be delving deeper into the events of The Great Fire of London!

For our final part of the day it was time to get active so out onto the field we went and for this term we are developing a range of skills through the game of rounders! Within this game it will help us to develop not only our throwing skills but it will also support us in developing our teamwork and catching skills, encourage us to develop our sprinting skills as we sprint between the bases and also develop our skills as a batter.

For today we worked in pairs and practiced throwing a ball towards each others cones, if we managed to hit the other persons cones then the cones got placed on top of each other. Initially we rolled the balls to develop our accuracy but then we moved onto throwing it!

The more we practiced the more we continued to hit the cones, demonstrating that are hand-eye co-ordination was improving!

We can't wait to continue to build on these skills! Why not have a go at home and practice throwing a ball towards a target? How many times can you hit the target?

Our day had almost come to an end but there was still enough time to share something very special from one of our Kingfishers, Mrs Brown had been lucky enough to have his very special trophy on her desk all day and now the time had come for it to be shared with the class!

Our Kingfisher trains extremely hard every Friday and plays in regular games, leading to his team recently winning the season! He is extremely proud to wear his red and black kit every week, scoring "3 or 4 goals" at least last season, but also telling us that it's not just about the number of goals, it's also about being a team player and he is certainly that because he currently plays either as a goal keeper, midfielder or a striker! WOW, what a team player!

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you all next week!
