We have had another busy week learning lots of things. In literacy, the children have been planning their own poems about where different animals live. On Tuesday the children worked with a partner to generate ideas for our poems. The children thought about different animals and where they lived. We then put all these ideas together on one large piece of paper. The children then used these ideas on Wednesday to plan their own poems. There were lots of super ideas. We are looking forward to reading their finished poems next week!
In maths, we have continued thinking about subtraction. Year 1 have been using number lines and working out missing numbers in a number sentence. For example, 13 - ? = 8. The children have learnt that the number of jumps that you do from the first number in the number sentence to the answer is the missing number.
Year 2 have continued thinking about exchanging a ten for ten ones if they don't have enough ones. For example, 63 - 15. Here the children make 65 with tens and ones. They have learnt to look at the ones first. Here we can't take 5 ones away from 3 ones. The children therefore have to exchange a ten for ten ones. They now have 13 ones and can therefore subtract 5 ones. They then subtract the tens. So 63 - 15 = 48.
On Tuesday our teddy bears came to school to have their portraits drawn. The children looked closely at the details on their cuddly toys. They also had to remember how to make a pastel colour lighter or darker or mix two primary colours together to get a secondary colour. There were some lovely portraits!
On Tuesday we were lucky to have the opportunity to take part in a street dance workshop. The children thoroughly enjoyed this!
This week also saw a team from Kingfishers take part in a "speed stacking" competition with other local schools. We were very proud of the children working together and trying their best to score as many points as possible - well done!
This week has also been Children's Mental Health Week. The children have read some books linked with different feelings. We read "Victor The Wolf With Worries" by Catherine Rayner and "Happy" by Nicola Edwards and Katie Hickey. We have talked about having worries and that everybody has worries. However, if these worries are making us sad there are things we can do to help us. For example, we can tell a grown up, we can go and do an activity that we enjoy to take our mind off our worries or we can think about things that we like and places that we like to go to.
As Mrs Brown stood on the gate, we couldn't quite believe it was time for another Friday and this was not any ordinary Friday......suddenly in the distance numbers started to appear, lots and lots of numbers! On clothes, as hats and even number accessories, they came in all different shapes and sizes, what could this mean? It could only mean one thing of course......
We were ready for a day filled with number activities and it was wonderful to see how much effort Kingfishers had put into their Number Day outfits!
We were soon delving deep into Maths, with our first Maths activities based all around playing cards Ace (number 1) up to Number 10. Kingfishers used their number bond knowledge to find all the number bonds to 10 and present them as a number sentence in their book!
We then moved onto dice games and to warm us up we played 'Full house' where in pairs we had to take it in turns to rolls the dice and colour in the number we rolled on our strip, the first person to colour in all their numbers won! Kingfishers loved this one!!!!
Kingfishers were now warmed up and ready for their next dice game! This time we rolled the dice twice and added the numbers together, then coloured in total of those numbers and repeated this until we had coloured in 5 in a row!
After all the excitement of Number Day, after lunch it was time for our mindfulness activity and this week Kingfishers were all eager to try 'The body scanner' from The mindfulness teacher. As we lay down and closed our eyes, we let the meditation guide us, concentrating on the different parts of our body and afterwards discussed how we felt....
"I could feel that my tummy is hungry!"
"I could feel my feet were hurting" We talked about why this might be, could it be from being so busy at lunchtime?
"I could feel here (pointing to her thigh), it was aching a bit" Again we talked about why this might be, what could have happened to make our bodies feel this way?
Why not try some mindfulness at home? The Mindful teacher has lots of great videos to get you started!
We were then ready for one of our favourite lessons of the week....Tag Rugby and this week we were putting all of the skills we had learnt so far into practice! We even had a go at trying to score a try whilst some us tried to defend!
As Number Day was coming to an end it was time for Show and Tell and this week really showed why we love the children to select something to show or tell us that is important to them!
First up we were treated to not just one but two trophy's! These had been won at the same Golf charity event but through different contests within it, one silver and one bronze and what impressive trophy's they were.

It was then time for the ladybird bag to come out, but what was inside? We could never have guessed that inside this bag were two babies (toys of course!) and we were delighted to learn that the clothes they were wearing were the actual clothes that our Kingfisher and her brother had worn as babies, even the 'hairband' used to be a bow tie! These were certainly two very special babies and we were pleased to hear that they have their very own baby cot to sleep in at night, which they would definitely need after their day trip to Kingfishers!
It was time for our final show and tell and what a one to end with! As the rosettes come out we knew this was going to be special, we were told one was for how well our Kingfisher had been riding a white horse called Princess and the second was because the horse had seen an airplane and become frightened and our Kingfisher showed such bravery that they were given the second rosette....we couldn't be prouder!
What a lovely way to end the week! Thank you to everyone for joining in with all our Number Day activities and with our Mental Health Awareness week....wow what a busy week we've had!
We can't believe next week is the last week of term and we are finishing our term on Friday with a Non-uniform day and the PTFA's movie night- we can't wait to see as many of you as possible there!
Have a wonderful weekend and we will see you all next week!
