Where has week 5 gone? As always the children have been living their lives in all its fullness! Year 2 started the week by looking at the story of Prince Cinders by Babette Cole. They thoroughly enjoyed this book and were very good at mentioning similarities between this story and the story of Cinderella. The children will be thinking about Prince Cinders and what his character is like. We came across lots of new "wow" words such as "proclamation" and "suit". The children had a go at writing sentences with their new "wow" words.
In maths we have moved on from multiplication and division. However, please keep going over the 2x, 5x and 10x tables with your children. They need to know these so lots of regular quick fire questions will really help!
This week we have started thinking about time. We have been reading and making the times for o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past. Have a go at telling the time at home. We will be moving on to five minute intervals shortly such as five past and ten to.
In science Year 1 and 2 observed their bean seeds to see if they had started to grow. Not a lot had happened with Year 1's seeds yet but the seeds that had been watered looked a bit bigger and their colour had changed slightly. One seed even had a crack in it. Year 2's seeds had seen some bigger changes with one of the seeds having a root and a shoot. The children drew their own observational drawings of the seeds and they each planted a bean seed that will come home next week.
In art we have continued to think about sculpture. Having designed our own paper people after being inspired by Stefania Morgante's dancing grandmothers, the children started to make the bodies of their own sculptures. They used the paper techniques that they had learnt earlier in the term - folding paper, curling paper etc. We are very much looking forward to seeing our finished sculptures.
With it being unseasonably cold this week it has only helped us in imagining what life must be like in Antarctica and it has been lovely to hear how much both Year One and Year Two can recall from the videos, books and photos that we have explored about this fascinating continent!

Once we had shared how much we knew, everyone then started creating their very own mini Antarctica! It was wonderful to see their knowledge come to life and how everyone was able to talk confidently about what they were including in their Antarctica....
We can't wait to finish them next week!
Despite the chill in the air and the talk of icebergs, we didn't let this get in the way of our athletics training! Today it was time to learn how to take part in the sprint race....
Ready......steady......go!
Coach Tom taught Year One and Year Two the importance of running in a straight line and remembering to stop at the correct end point.
We focused on our starting position and remembered that the sprint was a short but fast race!
This brought us perfectly to the end of the week when we selected the 3 races that we want to take part in at sports day this year. We could choose from the following; egg and spoon, relay, hurdles, sprint and long distance. The children really enjoyed being given the chance to choose what 3 races they wanted to join in with this year and are excited to practice the races and take part in them on sports day!
Next week we have some exciting activities happening, with our 'No pens day' on Wednesday when we will be putting down our pens for the day and taking part in some exciting activities that don't involve pens!

If this wasn't exciting enough, on Friday in the afternoon we will be going on our trip to listen to the story of The Firebird' through live musicians!

We will be having lunch there and at the moment the weather is looking lovely, so if it stays this way we will be having lunch outside! Please ensure that your child brings their water bottle on Friday as we will need to take it with us.
Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to an exciting week next week, making some wonderful memories in our final week of Summer Term 1, let's hope the weather warms up a little bit for us!
