Where has this week gone? We can't believe we have almost finished our first term of the year. We started the week by enjoying a lovely autumn afternoon in forest school. The children had to hunt for pictures of mushrooms and there was some very co-operative den building. Some children also had a go at using the fire steels to learn how to make sparks to make a fire. There was also lots of twig collecting in preparation for making a fire in next week's session.
In maths, Year 2 have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. They have also been comparing numbers thinking about "greater than" and "less than". The children have learnt to look at the tens to see which number has more. If the number of tens is the same, they need to look at the number of ones.
In English, the Year 2 children have been busy writing their stories based on "How To Catch A Star" by Oliver Jeffers. They have had some super ideas and they have all worked hard to make sure that they are using their phonics to support their spellings and that they are using capital letters, full stops and adjectives. Well done Year 2 for writing such super stories! Year 1 have also been trying hard with their writing. In our grammar session this week, they had a go at describing what was happening in a picture. They needed to remember their capital letters and full stops as well!
In spelling, Year 2 have been thinking about "i" in words such as kind and mind. Year 1 have continued to think about consonant blends, in particular where there are three consonants together such as the word spring or scrunch.
In science the children had a look at a bulb and compared it with some seeds. They then had to sort some pictures into groups depending on whether or not they were pictures of seeds or bulbs. We talked about what was similar and what was different between the bulbs and the seeds.
In art, we have continued to think about our paintings of "Starry, Starry Night". This week the children created a silhouette on their background that they painted last week. They cut out black card in the shape of trees, houses and churches. Next week we will finish our pictures by adding on the stars.
After another busy week Kingfishers were ready for their Thursday morning common exception word activity and this week were thrilled when they were told it was time for pyramid writing!

It was wonderful to see how eager all of Kingfishers were to have a go at using this method for practicing their spelling! Why not have a go at using this method at home, it makes spelling that bit more fun for everyone!
Within our class worship on a Thursday we are now using our prayer pebbles and taking a moment of reflection to think about....
"How have we been living life in all it's fullness?"

Kingfishers took this moment and enjoyed "being calm and peaceful" , reflecting on how their week had been and how they had been living life in it's fullness this week. As we came back together these are some of the thoughts that they shared....
"I enjoyed coming back to school and spending my first full day at school"
"I enjoyed helping my friends do their first pocket to rocket in Rugby"
"I have been helping others in class this week"
"I enjoyed Forest school and making a den"
"I spent time cleaning my room this week, I lined all my cuddly toys up"
"I enjoyed PE, it's my favourite"
"I enjoyed drawing 30 pictures!"
"I wrote my own story"
"I enjoyed Forest school too, I was cutting in it this week"
What a wonderful moment for us to share together!
In the afternoon we continued our Geography, moving from land to water and exploring oceans of the world! Kingfishers and Robins learnt what an Ocean was and were amazing when discussing how this linked to their knowledge of the Equator from the previous lesson. When asked whether the Southern Ocean and Arctic Ocean would be warm or cold this is what they said....
"They would be cold because they are further away from the Equator. If you are nearer you are warmer"
We learnt that the Pacific Ocean is the largest Ocean in the world and were amazed by how far it stretched but what amazed them the most was in fact the Sea Cow that lives in the Indian Ocean!

Kingfishers and Robins worked extremely hard to label their own world map with the Oceans using a map to support them, they are being fantastic at map reading, great work!
It was Friday already and in Phonics this week we ended the week with one of our favourite spelling activities....spelling timer!
How many times could we write our given word in 1 minute? The Mission Impossible timer was set and we were ready to go!
The day was simply whizzing by and in the afternoon we came together with Robins to think about how we were going to make our classroom a respectful place to learn!
This started with a ball game, simply saying 'Hello' to each other and then saying something that we liked about each other eased us into our respectful afternoon and helped us to really think about how we wanted to behave around each other and ensure we were treating others as we want to be treated.
Once we were back in class it was time to think about how we would create a respectful learning environment.
This is what we came up with.....
What a wonderful way to end our week together! We hope you all have a lovely weekend making memories together and wanted to leave you with just one way we have been..
