We have made it to half term! What a busy term it has been "living life in all its fullness"! The week started on a high. Forest school was full of fun again this week. The main focus was lighting a fire and cooking apples dipped in cinnamon sugar on it. The children learnt about how to light the fire and how to keep themselves safe when lighting and cooking on the fire.
Sadly this was our last Forest School session for the time being. We will have another slot later in the year. After half term it will be P.E. on a Monday instead of Forest School so please make sure that your child comes to school on a Monday in their P.E. kit after half term.
In maths Year 1 and Year 2 have pretty much finished their topics on place value. The children have been comparing and ordering numbers. They have also been using number lines and thinking about where the numbers would go on the number lines. Year 2 have also been learning how to count in threes.
In English, Year 2 have edited their stories which they wrote last week. We had a real focus on spelling tricky words. We have been working hard on these in our spelling lessons. Please look out for some tricky spelling words coming home for Year 2. Year 1 have continued thinking about words that have two or three consonants together and in grammar, Year 1 have had a specific focus on making sure that when we are writing our sentences they start with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
This week we have finally completed our own versions of "Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh. We think you will all agree, the pictures look amazing!
In science the children found out about the life cycle of a daffodil. We have planted some bulbs and we will now wait and observe what happens to these bulbs through the winter and into spring...
We could hardly believe that we had reached the end of Term 1! As the wind blew windly, the cold weather was certainly settling in for the day and we were ready to come into the warm and start our day. Today we continued exploring measuring, focusing this week on measuring in Meters!
Kingfishers loved using Meter sticks and rulers to make comparisons between Meters and Centimeters, deciding what objects around the classroom were longer or shorter than a meter!
They were able to use the meter sticks to check their estimations and even began to count the height or width of an object in meters, including the classroom, which we worked out was 7 meters wide!
Within our shared reading we continued to explore 'Bob' The Man on the Moon and this time we got to meet Billy, the Man from Mars and Sam the Man from Saturn, who were in fact Bob's best friends! We also learnt that Bob didn't just clean the Moon but he also helped to entertain tourists who visited the Moon!
So our mission this week was to create a souvenir for the tourist who were visiting the moon! Some of us created bunting, others designed a new Moon model! We had Moon slime and even some rocket models! The creations were so creative! We can't wait to write our persuasive descriptions of them when we get back after half term to help sell what we have designed to the tourists!
We were simply floating through the day today and were soon enough into the afternoon! As Robins and Kingfishers came together, it was time for Religious Education and today we were faced with one big questions....
How do we know how to behave?
As the children started talking this is what they came up with......
"Our Mums and Dads" "Grandparents" "Aunts and Uncles" "Older children"
"Teachers" "Prime Minister" "Police" "God"
Wow! That's a lot of help we have to learn how to behave!
We talked about what rules we might have and who has the same rules, like brushing our teeth before bedtime, not snacking before dinner and not running in school. We discussed how some rules we might all share and how sometimes we might have different rules in our own houses.
We discuss how in the Jewish religion they have food rules and looked at what these were and also discussed food rules if you are a Vegetarian or Vegan.
Today however we were going to discuss the......
Ten Commandments
We explored what these were and how they might help people live. We discussed the Golden rule that Jewish people live by...
"Do unto others as you would have do unto you"
We discussed what this meant and then everyone got a chance to make their own Golden rule! A rule that they wanted to live their lives by.....
"I will not litter and I will be kind" "I will look after others" "I will help people"
"I will look after the world" "I will look after animals and all people on the world" "I will always say kind words"
"I will always try my best" "I will help others if they need help"
To help us remember our Golden rule we made them into shooting stars!
We finished our term by giving everyone a proud token to show all of Robins and Kingfishers just one way that they have made us proud this term! Please take the time to read your child's proud token and celebrate it with them!
We also had a birthday to celebrate at the end of the day as one of our Kingfishers has his birthday tomorrow, so from all of us in school we wish him a very Happy Birthday!
Have a wonderful half term break and enjoy some family Autumn Fun!
Remember Monday 3rd is an INSET day so we look forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday 4th November!
