Welcome back to school!
After our Summer holiday it was wonderful to welcome Kingfishers back into school and they blew us away with how they came in! Our now Year 2's were calm, ready to learn, respectful of their friends as they shared their Summer adventures and were simply a delight to have back in school!
How better to warm up ready for our year ahead but with a little bit of......Danny Go of course, Kingfishers love for movement beaks at certainly not waivered and they were ready to choose their favourite of the songs to get us started, it could of course only be 'Escape from Flamingo island'!
Just look at how well we can balance like a Flamingo!
As our first day progressed it was time to begin Geography and as our Year 1 Robins were still helping to settle in our new Robins, we discussed what our upcoming topic is all about....
Continents and Oceans
We recapped the countries within the UK to begin with and then explored a whole world map! We were blown away by how many countries we could see, small ones and big ones and also countries that are islands, just like us! As the screen changed we were suddenly shocked to see the borders to the countries disappear and in their place large areas of different colours, what could these be showing?
Mrs Brown talked through the different 'continents' and we discussed which continent the United Kingdom is part of, it was great exploring the world map!
Kingfishers then created their very own topic page, representing what our topic would be about, we can't wait to start learning more next week....
This year we have also introduced a new routine into Kingfishers and are excited to announce we will be celebrating each others birthdays with a birthday card made by one of our Kingfishers! We even need to hand a birthday card out on the very first day! We can't wait to mark the celebration of each birthday in this way.
It wasn't long before Kingfishers were back into the swing of lessons and this week in Maths we started exploring 2D shapes. Kingfishers are showing increasing recognition of 2D shapes and how to count their sides by marking off each side as they count, there wasn't a side left uncounted!
However our favourite part was the shape investigation! We were given 15 lollipop sticks and asked to make 3 different 2D shapes, what shapes would we make? How many sides would they have? Could we make 3 shapes that used all of our 15 sticks? The exploration was exciting!
The Daily Mile was back and we were thrilled to be doing it with our Year 1 friends on Friday! Although for some the Daily Mile seemed further than before, we can safely say the distance hasn't changed and once we'd warmed up we were soon making it around the track twice for our Daily Mile!
Just look at us go!
As we finished our Daily Mile it was time for our PE lesson to continue and this week we loved beginning our new PE topic of 'Fitness'! Through this we will explore the effects that exercises has on our bodies and develop our fitness skills along the way!
After a warm up activity it was soon time for the main event....Heads, shoulders, knees........clothes! With the children put into pairs with a beanbag between them acting as the clothes we were ready to begin!
Heads......shoulders......knees......
Clothes!
We loved it!
Year 2 Kingfishers will now all have their first reading book so please ensure these come in everyday and Forest school for both Kingfishers and Year 1 will be on Monday so please come prepared with Waterproofs (coat and trousers), old clothes and wellies!
Year 1 have just one reading book - for this weekend only, as their reading books will be changed every Monday, so if they read their book over the weekend, don't forget to write it in the reading record. As from Monday, it will be 'business as usual' and they will have 2 reading books per week.
It has been a super first 2 days back and we can't wait to see everyone next week! Have a wonderful weekend making lots of memories together...see you Monday!
