Welcome back Kingfishers! I hope your summer was filled with laughter, rest, and adventures that left you feeling refreshed and ready for a brand-new chapter. As we step into this school year, think of it as a fresh page in your story—full of opportunities to learn, grow, and discover new strengths.
Our classroom is a place where your ideas matter, your questions are valued, and your efforts will always be celebrated. Miss Lally and Mrs Brown have been so impressed how everyone has come back with such enthusiasm to have a go at all the activities we have started this week and have all shown kindness towards each other, as we know what a tiring start to the term the first few days can be.
All around the classroom, children hunched over their books, pencils scratching in bursts of excitement, what could have caused this I hear you ask! It was of course our new Friday Free Write activity and today’s prompt was simple: A magical door in the forest or was it a creepy door? In their minds, it became so much more. One child imagined a door carved from bark that led to a Fairy house; another saw it as a crooked frame that the forever key opened. They traded ideas in excited tones, each adding further exciting vocabulary—spooky, suspicious, dragons, sparkly.... —until the forest in their stories felt alive enough to step into. And though the door existed only in their words, each child felt, deep down, that if they ever wandered far enough beneath the branches, they might just find it waiting.
We can't wait to find out what next week's picture will be!
In Maths this week we have been exploring Place Value and the children loved doing this through practical activities on Friday. One of their favourite activities was when they played against each other and using 2 dice each, rolled their dice to make a two digit number and whoever made the biggest number won a point!
In science, we began exploring the fascinating world of everyday materials, discovering what objects are made from and why. They learn to identify materials such as wood, metal, plastic, glass, fabric, and paper, and learn not only where they come from but also why we use them for the different objects. The children were specifically amazed to find out that cotton comes from a plant!
Once we had explore different objects we then began discussed different materials and whether they would be suitable for different objects....
"What would happen if you wore a coat made from paper in the rain?"
and
"Would glass make a good material for a football?"
Once we had explored these questions the children then put their knowledge into action and began labelling objects with the correct materials!
Why not go on a material hunt at home and see what materials you can find around your house?
Can you find an object that uses more than one material? What materials does it use?
From next week we have Forest school on a Monday and PE (Gymnastics) on a Tuesday so please ensure that your child brings their Forest school kit with them to school on Monday.
- Waterproof trousers and jacket
- Dark coloured spare trousers
- Long sleeved top- please ensure it is long sleeved so that your arms are protected.
- Wellies
- Spare socks- these are so important as your socks might get wet!
- A carrier bag- We can then ensure the children's wet clothes go into the carrier bag
Please sure your child comes into school wearing their full PE kit on Tuesday.
What a productive start to the week we have had! Everyone now has a reading book in their book bags and we would like each child to spend 5-10 minutes everyday reading at home, so please do remember to write a short comment in their reading record to let us know you have read with them. We will then be changing their reading books at the end of every week if they have read their books. If you have any questions about their reading please do not hesitate to come and talk to either Miss Lally or Mrs Brown.
