Autumn 1 Week 2
Our first full week back at school has been an absolute joy, filled with the warmth of reuniting with old friends and the excitement of getting to know new teachers. Every morning has began with enthusiasm, walking through the gates and engaging in conversation with each other or play until the sound of bell signals it's time for the day to begin! This week we have dived straight into our learning and when discussing with Kingfishers what they have most enjoyed about their week, it was difficult to capture it all in the blog.
In Literacy this week we started our new story 'Rosie's walk', which has soon become a favourite within the class!
Kingfishers loved exploring the characters within the story and using the vocabulary within it to write their own sentences, before ordering the events of the story on a storyboard. They then explored changing parts of the story to create their own version, ready to write it next week!
To start the week in Maths we began by exploring Place Value and looking at numbers 1-20, firstly through ordering them and then recognising them when they were represented in different ways, such as on a dice, with dienes and even with our fingers!
The class thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world of geometry this week as they learned to identify 2D and 3D shapes. Through hands-on activities, the students eagerly hunted for 2D shapes like circles and triangles before transitioning to 3D shapes like spheres, cubes, and cylinders, discussing the difference between them. They loved finding real-world examples of these shapes around the classroom, turning the lesson into an exciting interactive game. Their confidence grew tremendously as they mastered the vocabulary to name them and recognise the odd one out in a set of shapes!
Children in both Year 1 and Year 2 loved exploring colour mixing as they experiment with paints to watch primary colours transform into new secondary shades. As Kingfishers explored the different colours you could see the amazement on their faces as they created new colours, not necessarily the ones they thought they would create!
We could hardly believe we had reached Friday and our week was almost over but we had just enough time for one last learning adventure! It was time for Science and as Year 1 went off on their materials hunt and Year 2 completed theirs within the classroom they gripped their whiteboards tightly, eyes darting around as the materials hunt began. The mission was to find and classify different objects based on what they were made of, turning the familiar room into a treasure map of textures. Off they went, running their fingers over rough, then smooth materials. With every item being checked off—from the plastic cup to the solid, wooden spoon, the cold, metal gates—they began to see the everyday school world not just as a place to study, but as a fascinating puzzle!
On Monday we will have Forest school again so please remember to bring in your Forest school kit!
