Autumn 1 Week 4
Another week begins.....
The crisp October air gave way to an unexpected streak of golden warmth, turning the primary school playground into a sun-drenched haven where jumpers were quickly shed and tied around waists. During morning break, children darted across the playground in crisp t-shirts, kicking through every crunchier piles of amber leaves that are gathering along the fence lines or gentle blowing across the gravel floor. There was a quiet magic in the air—a fleeting Indian summer that is blurring the lines between the freedom of July and the cosy routines of term time. Some of us are willing Autumn breeze to come, wishing for cosy jumpers to be worn, whilst others are relishing in the warmth of the sun. Enjoying the last few days or will it be weeks of the warm September and who knows possibly October sunlight!
This week we certainly made the most of it during our Forest school adventures! Under the canopy of the woodland site, children immersed themselves in the sensory world of the forest floor, gathering armfuls of crisp Beech and Hazel leaves that carpeted the floor. Their hands sorted the foliage by vibrant shades of green, rust, and gold, while others used magnifying glasses to trace the delicate, spiderweb-thin veins running through each leaf.
Guided by curiosity and the gentle outdoors, they transformed simple autumn foliage into art, creating mystical creatures out of leaves....
A Starry Night
Huddled over paper with palettes loaded with cobalt, ultramarine, and stark white, the children dipped their brushes into paint to discover how many distinct shades of blue they could create. By swirling tiny dabs of white and yellow directly into deep navy, they watched in delight as rich cerulean and electric indigo emerged right before their eyes, mimicking the churning, dynamic energy of Van Gogh's night sky. Their small hands practiced making short, rhythmic swoops and spiraling strokes across the page, layering light blues over dark to capture the luminous, rolling momentum of The Starry Night. As they experimented, the classroom buzzed with excitement over how a single color could be transformed into a whole universe of motion!
As the children waited patiently to be shown this weeks free write picture, they could hardly believe their eyes as on the screen a mystical reptile appeared....but not all of the reptile, just one single fire orange eye, glaring out at us, with pebble like scales, as blue as the ocean. Was a dragon? Was a crocodile? or was it part lizard, part boy? who knew, well only the person writing it, it was up to us! So, with pencils poised above wide-lined exercise books, the children let their imaginations wander into hidden worlds populated by mythical reptile creatures of their own design. Brows furrowed in deep concentration as they drafted vivid descriptions, hunting through word mats for rich adjectives to portray shimmering emerald scales that glowed in the dark, razor-sharp claws, or gentle dragon-like beasts with wings of webs. Tiny whispers echoed around the tables as pupils read their sentences aloud to test the sound of their words, describing ancient creatures that breathed liquid starlight or slept beneath the lava of the tallest volcanos. Caught in the spell of their own storytelling, their small hands flew across the pages, eagerly bringing these wondrous, scaly legends to life through the power of their own words!
As we neared the end of the week, it was time to vote for our new HOUSE CAPTAINS! Firstly we listened to their well prepared speeches, pleased to hear how much they would support us on the playground and how eager they were to guide us in the right direction on Sports Day this year!
It was then time to vote!
We had casted our votes and next week we will find out who our House captains will be! How exciting!
What a fantastic week it has been—the entire class has worked incredibly hard and shown brilliant dedication across all our activities. We have been so impressed by how each pupil has taken true ownership of their learning, stepping up with focus, curiosity, and a positive mindset every single day. Kingfishers should all be so proud of the fantastic effort they have put in. Have a wonderful, well-deserved rest over the weekend, and we look forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready for even more exciting learning next week!
