9th October
In English this week, we continued to focus on diary entries. On Monday, we explored cohesive devices – why we use them and what they are. After we had written our first draft, we also focused on editing for a purpose, to make our diaries even better. In Maths, it has been all about problems and their structures. We have looked at vocabulary to decide what operation to use and drawing the bar model to see what is missing; a part or the whole. In History, we found out about other key events during World War II and created our own timelines. For Science, our learning on life cycles continued and this time it was all about insects. We even designed our own insect and drew out its life cycle. In PSHE, we looked at our needs and what we need to learn effectively. We linked these discussions back to the Ghanaian children who don’t all get to go to school. Are their needs being met? For PE, we worked on control in football and got to use the apparatus in gymnastics – showing how we can balance, take flight and land. In Art, this week we looked at O'Keeffe's interpretations of flowers and used them to inspire our own versions of flower close-ups, filling an entire page of our sketchbooks! We're about ready to take on our final pieces next week!
As part of our WWII history topic this term, we will be running an "Evacuation Day" on Wednesday 21st October. We'd like to invite the children to come in dressed in 1940s clothes, just like the evacuees wore in 1941, when they were sent out of the larger towns and cities to countryside areas like Great Shefford. We'll be hosting some visitors from RAF Welford Historical Society as well as some other enrichment activities to help the Red Kites get a feel for what life was like as an evacuee. Outfits can be made up from what you have at home - there's no need to buy anything special. We'd suggest the following:
Boys: school trousers/shorts or chinos, button up shirt, waistcoat or knitted jumper, lace up shoes or boots (or school shoes)
Girls: pleated skirt and button up shirt or blouse, or patterned dress, knitted cardigan or jumper, buckle or lace up shoes or boots (or school shoes)
(No trainers or jeans, please!)
If you're finding it tricky to source clothing, please come and speak to us - we have a good collection of costumes from our plays that can be repurposed!
We are also asking for a £1 donation per pupil to help fund our planned hands-on activity to learn about rationing and the food available to Britons in WWII.
Thank you for your support!
Have a great weekend.
