Christmas has arrived at school!

In English, our focus this week has been poetry. We have explored stanzas, tankas and figurative language. In Maths, we have been comparing and ordering fractions when they don’t have the same denominator. In DT, we are learning about frame structures. We experimented this week with using different resources to build two and three dimensional shapes to test which are stronger and how we can reinforce them. We particularly enjoyed making spaghetti and marshmallow structures and using the Brio construction set. In PE on Monday, we had a go at curling, boccia and seated volleyball with Mr Mandry and continued our tag rugby learning with Coach Tom on Thursday. In Music, as well as lots of singing rehearsals, we enjoyed playing Christmas tunes on our trombones. In Computing, we are still using 2DIY3D to design our own games. This week we designed and created our sprites and then we plotted where collectables, baddies, walls and scenery would go.

Obviously the highlight of our week was going to Oxford Museum of Natural History. We took part in a workshop about insects, where we had to decide what type of habitat each group of insects would live in. In each group there were a variety of different insects such as dragon flies, butterflies, bees, beetles and many more. We had so much fun using the magnifying glasses to look closely at each one. We also discussed how everyone has an impact on their environment and how we have a role to play in. The leader of our group had so much knowledge.

Did you know?

One of the dinosaur skeletons in the museum was found in a coal mine in Belgium?

Flies do 70% of pollination of plants?

Elephants poop 8 or 9 times a day - each one is about the size of a table?!

Entomologists are scientists that study insects?

After our workshop we explored the museum. There were so many things to looks at, read about and touch - yes touch!! We also managed to complete different scavenger hunts.

Facts we learnt….

The oldest item in museum is a meteorite at 4.5 billion years old - Lilly-Rose

Talc is the softest mineral and diamond is hardest mineral - Sophie

Dodo drawings were not accurate - they were actually slimmer with a longer neck and more upright - Eleanor

The first flowering plants grew in the Jurassic period - Lilly-Kate

We had an amazing time!

Have a great weekend.
