Now onto this week....well it was all about the Science really.
On Monday, we were checking in on Betty, Michael- Leigh, Nitro and Rose (our caterpillars). They have grown so much! I have to admit, for me they just sit in the corner....doing their 'thing', however the Robins are in love with them - they greet them in the morning, they talk to them, they are constantly checking whether they are moving - they are like class pets. Having the caterpillars is really supporting the children's understanding of the lifecyle of a butterfly which of course links in beautifully to science.
On Tuesday we were investigating similarities and differences of animals and we were matching halves of animal faces - sometimes we found a match and compared butterfly with butterfly and other times we deliberately matched a deer with a field mouse and found similarities and differences with two very different creatures. The children looked closely at the features of the animals, e.g. the shape of the head, the colour of the eyes, feathers and fur - their discussions and vocabulary were really great.
On Wednesday it was our Science day and we came together in our Houses.
The morning began with instructions delivered by Mrs Chapman who is the Science Lead.
The brief.....
*Work in teams to create a way of protecting an egg from cracking when dropped from a height.
* Our 'materials' were supplied along with £100 (not real money)
* firstly design our product
*then 'buy' the materials
*then make the product
* finally - test it!
We were off!
Then on Friday, we looked at animals in their habitats - it was just too hot to take our learning outside, so we switched all the lights off and had a cooler afternoon. A lovely way to finish off our very interesting Science week.
Throughout the week, we also managed to find time for Phonics and Maths, Art, Music, Balance Bikes, Show and Tell and Mystery Reader.
Our Mystery Reader was a special one this week - every week we ask the children if it their Mum, Dad, Gran, Grampa etc and Otto for TWO YEARS has said - no, it can't ever be my Mum she is working.....well he had a real surprise this week when it was his Mum who appeared....his eyes were a little watery....as were mine.
Show and Tell was all about being a Fire fighter - we could have spent the whole afternoon listening and asking questions. Top secret that I have not shared with the children yet - this little fire fighter will be meeting real firefighters next week as we are having a visit from the fire brigade!
The theme of this year's Science week is Curiosity and we could not have got off to a better start to the week than by being curious in Forest School. We ran, we climbed, we explored, we asking about a million questions, we collaborated, we enjoyed the thick oozy mud....we could go on and on - you can see what we mean in the photos below.
Have a wonderful weekend - enjoy Father's Day and see you all on Monday (the weather forecast is telling me its going to be hot, hot, hot)
