Term 6- Week 5

Into the slightly cooler land of Forest school.......

The heat certainly continued to rise this week and as we entered the week we also entered a heatwave! With the classroom hot, the playground hot, the children hot and to be honest just about everywhere and everyone hot, we were glad that the temperature in Forest School was a few degrees cooler than it was outside in the heatwave world!

Mhairi had soon set us our first challenge this week, which was right up our street! To find as many wooden Robin pictures as we could...how many were there? Where could they be? As we searched high and low, it wasn't long before we were finding them within the bushes and even some hanging from the trees!

We then went off and started exploring for ourselves and this week we all had a real focus on dens, creating our own from the sticks that we found on the ground and checking that it was stable enough to go inside!

Just look at how it took shape!

We even made a little kitchen to cook in!

Robins also loved adventurous play in Forest school this week, from creating seesaws to using wooden plants to create bridges, their imaginations were never ending and it was lovely to watch them problem solve how to create different structures!

Wibble wobble wibble wobble! Just look at how well we are balancing along the rope this week! Robins used all their problem solving skills to work out what could help them become more stable as they moved across!

With nature always in the forefront of our minds when we're in Forest school, some of our Robins decided to made a 'delicious' meal for the birds. Finding some berries and some other 'ingredients' they cooked up a storm in their very own oven and created a 'soup' ready for the birds to tuck into whenever they fancied!

After so much fantastic writing for The Enormous Turnip it was time to move onto another Talk for Writing story this week we were revisiting The Three Little Pigs and this week Robins continued to blow our.....well house down would be more appropriate this week with some fantastic writing! They started the week by writing the beginning of the story, just look at how fantastic their story writing sentences are! It is clear to see that their sentence starters and spelling of some really tricky words are now embedded. We can remember when they found the word 'once' tricky to spell, let alone write a sentence.

It wasn't just in writing that we were revisiting previous learning, we were revisting previous learning in Maths too. We were reinforcing our accurate counting to 20, embedding our fluency with number bonds to 10 and to help us remember these number bonds we were revisiting our previous learning of using the balance scales accurately. Did you know that the Numicon 'plates' are also weighted - this means that if we put a 10 'plate' on one side of the balance scale and we put an 8 and a 2 in the opposite bucket on the scales they balance - of course they do because 8+2 =10. So we spent some time finding out what other pieces of Numicon we could use to make 10, well at least that is what we were supposed to be doing but in true Robins style - we haven't fully understood less is more, and it turns out it was far more exting to find out how many Numicon plates we could actually fit in the balance buckets.

Then on Thursday, we were back on our balance bikes or the adventure climbing equipment with a bit of sports day practice thrown in the mix ahead of Tuesday.

Then of course we finished the day off with Mystery Reader - this week we had a double treat - a Mum and a Dad. Huge thank you to Teddy's Mum and Dad for kindly being this week's fantastic Mystery Readers - we have another slot available next week.....any takers - just pop it in an email or catch us on the gate one morning.

On Friday, we welcomed two of our September new starters into the classroom for the day. Please, please will you thank your children for the care, generosity of their time and friendship that every single Robins gave to the two new starters. They played, they shared, they showed them around the school, they hepled out over lunch - they were all like an extra pair of eyes and the two children went home having had a very fun day and also very very tired.

Thanks also to the three students from a local secondary school who have spent their work experience week with us. They have been a fantastic support and we have enjoyed and appreciated every moment we had with them.

Have a wonderful weekend and see you all on Tuesday at Sports day - Mums, Dads, Grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles - you are all welcome - just bring sunhats, suncream, chairs, picnic lunches and lots of voice ready to cheer your children on!
